I am a Visual art student in my third year of study. I went to Abbotts College where I was awarded the best artist in matric in 2012. My favourite hobby is gaming and has been the starting point for my third year theme which I plan to carry out in my 4th year.
My theme this year started off with me wanting to create myself as different gaming characters that were directly related to experiences and emotions that I have faced. My work then further developed when I started exploring the ‘cyborg’, how it influences humanity as well as the destruction it causes. From the cyborg theme I then took my work to a different level and used technology and life’s system as the base of my work. The theme I have come to terms with in my work is based on the order against life’s system, how we only live by rules created by humanity, how freedom is not a reality. “Go to school, get a job, get married, have some kids, pay your bills, pay your taxes, watch TV, listen to the news, obey the law, now repeat after me: I am free”- Unknown. This quote directly relates to the meaning behind my work. In simple term I’m displaying the aggression against life’s system and projecting how I disagree with it. I’m portraying that technology also runs our lives and that humanity depends on it for the majority. The gaming influence found in my work is directly related to life, how like in a game we start and we finish it which is linked to life in the terms of we are born and we die. I have used anger as the emotion I am portraying because it is the most expressive, whereas technology has no emotion at all which creates the contradiction between the two. I want to be more than what is expected from us in the quote above, I want to fight and rise higher than life’s system.
