As a 22 year old female Muslim South African, being an artist has never been more interesting. Coming from a predominantly Muslim community, art is not something commonly explored which makes me a unique young individual with the responsibility of bringing awareness into my surrounding environment. Completing 12 years in an Islamic institution I took a fine inkling towards the arts and began oil painting from the age of 14. I knew I needed to become more than just a painter, but an artist with a greater social responsibility. Today I am a 3rd year student completing my Bachelor of technology in Visual Arts.
My work varies amongst many mediums including; painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and photography. Described as someone who is 'different' and 'edgy' my artworks focus on the concept surrounding my identity as a female Muslim South African and what it means to be a hybrid of a culture that contradicts the religion I follow. My work provides a study of the nuances that exists within these categories that is achieved through portraiture, self-exploration photography, painting in impasto to achieve thick layers of content within origins of pattern from the middle east towards the orient.
Overall fragments and ideas of origin, beliefs, femininity and heritage hold presence my artistic explorations
