My Name is Riccardo Montali, I’m a 20 year old male with a background of Italian, Greek, Egyptian and South African heritage. I had become interested in art in 2010, and only from 2012 had I thought of the potential to integrate art full time into my life. Through the beginning of my university career I had been challenged to confront society and my own identity, questioning what, where, who, how and why. My identity in itself has furthermore become a one of the focal topic I choose to deal with within my artworks.
I have taken a liking towards drawing, sculpture and photography as I feel they are personally the best means to achieve what I want in my art making. Each fully capturing the message I try to convey. I still attempt other forms of art making as each process has different influences towards a project I might be working on or one I am to work on.
In my recent art works I deal with the concept of my own identify, however branching on a particular aspect of it which many, not only myself experience. This is the lack of or further, undiscovered identity. I’ve worked on projects which stood to uncover this dilemma yet have had many various possibilities. This then allowed me to comment on the fact that I myself and many others present ourselves in an array of ‘selves’. Each situation in which we present ourselves, it only shows light to an aspect of our true selves, never once revealing a solid identity. Over time developing, and growing, adapting and learning.
